Cancer is not something anyone would associate with happiness. It brings uncertainty, fear, and emotional and physical struggles. And yet, in the midst of these challenges, many people affected by cancer still find moments of joy, strength, and deeper meaning in life.
This is why we chose to talk about happiness - not because cancer is easy, but because happiness is still possible, even in difficult times. Happiness doesn’t mean ignoring pain. It means discovering what gives life value, even during the hardest moments. In fact, science shows that happiness strengthens our immune system, lowers inflammation, and even supports better recovery from illness.
Happiness - More than Just a Feeling

Many people chase happiness like a finish line, only to find it elusive. Some believe it lies in success, wealth, or relationships. Yet, even when these are attained, something often still feels missing. So what exactly is happiness? Can we really find it in the midst of difficulty? Psychologists describe two types of happiness: 🔆 Hedonic Happiness - The pleasure-driven kind, like enjoying a great meal or a fun trip. It’s short-lived, but it adds color to life. 🔆 Eudaimonic Happiness - A deeper fulfillment that stems from meaning, purpose, and connection. This is the kind of happiness that sustains us.
A balanced life often includes both - moments of joy and a sense of meaning.
How Can You Find Happiness During a Cancer Journey? Happiness is something that can be nurtured, especially when living with or beyond cancer. Here are a few ways to begin: 🔆 Shift Your Focus to the Present: Practices like mindfulness and gratitude help you notice and appreciate the good that already exists. 🔆 Build Meaningful Connections: Invest in friendships, family, and community. Connection fosters emotional strength and support. 🔆 Engage in Activities That Bring Joy: Whether it's art, walking, music, or reading - meaningful activities offer comfort and grounding. 🔆 Help Others: Giving creates a sense of purpose and lifts both the giver and the receiver. 🔆 Embrace Imperfection and Growth: Let go of perfection. Growth often comes from setbacks and challenges. 🔆 Practice Gratitude: Even a small daily reflection on what you're thankful for can shift your perspective.
We don’t need to feel happy all the time. But even in the darkest seasons, it’s possible to find moments of peace and joy.
Is Connection the Key to Happiness?

When life feels overwhelming, what truly helps us through?
Science gives a clear answer: human connection. More than achievements or material comfort, it’s our relationships that form the foundation of lasting happiness. Whether you're navigating treatment, recovery, or life after cancer, the presence of others - their kindness, support, and love - can be transformative.
The Science of Connection. Our need for connection is biological. It’s in our brains and our hearts. Our body produces 🔆 Oxytocin, the love hormone, which helps reduce stress and builds trust, and 🔆 Dopamine which reinforces positive interactions.
Strong social ties reduce anxiety, improve immune function, and give life meaning. Meanwhile, loneliness is a risk factor for many health problems. Building connection isn’t just helpful - it’s essential.
