Your Guide to Chemotherapy

❓WHAT IS CHEMOTHERAPY?

Definition: Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to destroy or slow the growth of cancer cells.

Purpose: To cure cancer, to control cancer growth, and/or to relieve symptoms of cancer (palliative chemotherapy).

How it's given: Can be intravenous (IV), oral, injection, or topical.

Treatment cycles: Often given in cycles with rest periods in between.

💬 QUESTIONS TO ASK TO YOUR ONCOLOGY DOCTOR OR NURSE?

Bring these to your first consultation (and feel free to add your own):

  • What type of chemotherapy will I receive?

  • What is the goal of my treatment?

  • How often will I have chemotherapy and for how long?

  • What side effects might I experience?

  • Will I be able to work or travel during treatment?

  • Will I be able to care for my family during treatment?

  • Will my fertility be affected?

  • Who do I contact if I have questions between appointments?

  • Is financial or emotional support available?

  • What happens after treatment ends?

Tip: Bring a trusted friend or family member for support and note taking. No question is too small.

💡PRACTICAL TIPS

Arrange transport to and from appointments and treatment days

Ask a relative or friend to come to treatment with you, for support and company

Keep a diary of your symptoms, and any medications taken

Bring a book, headphones, warm soft blanket, fluffy socks or cuddly toy to your session

🌹ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS

Fertility and Family Planning - ask your doctor about fertility preservation options before you start treatment.

Hair and Nails - hair fall and fragile nails are common with some treatments. You might want to think about gentle manicures, cold capping, eyebrow microblading and wigs or head scarfs.

Sexual Health - some changes occur commonly and are treatable. Talk openly to your doctor about any problems with intimacy or sexual function.

Work and Finances - discuss time off and sick pay with your employer and ask your care team if you have financial concerns.
