Embracing Who I Am Today: Finding My Way After Cancer

As part of our October reflections, we asked people affected by cancer: “How has cancer changed the way I approach my life today?” Beyond awareness campaigns and medical treatments, we wanted to make space for personal experiences that often remain unseen and listen to the people behind the diagnosis.

Embracing Who I Am Today: Finding My Way After Cancer

How Has Cancer Changed the Way I Approach My Life Today?

For Yasmeen, communication was always much more than a profession. As a television presenter, her voice was an essential part of her identity. When tongue cancer changed her ability to speak and express herself, she faced the challenge of finding her way in a life that looked very different from before.

We are grateful to Yasmeen for sharing her personal reflections on identity, change and learning to embrace who she is today.

Here is her story, in her own words...

Cancer changed my life in ways I could never have imagined. It challenged not only my health but also my identity, my priorities and my understanding of what it means to truly live.

For years, I worked as a live TV show presenter, where my voice, my tongue and my ability to think and respond spontaneously were essential to my profession. Communication was not just my job; it was a major part of who I was. While working on my YouTube channel, I was diagnosed with tongue cancer, followed by major tongue reconstruction surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Suddenly, the very strengths that had shaped my professional life became my greatest challenges.

Losing the ease of speech and spontaneous expression has not been easy to overcome. There are moments when I miss the person I was before cancer. But I have gradually learned that while some of my abilities have changed, my thoughts, dreams, spirit and desire to contribute remain very much alive.

My faith and gratitude for the countless blessings still present in my life have helped me look beyond what I lost and appreciate what I continue to have.

Cancer has taught me to value health, relationships, time and inner peace more deeply. Life has brought further personal challenges and losses, but I refuse to let them define my entire story. I still have dreams to pursue, work to return to, people to connect with and experiences to share.

Today, I understand that resilience does not mean being strong every day. It means accepting difficult days without losing hope for tomorrow. I no longer measure life by how closely it resembles my past. Instead, I try to embrace who I am today, with greater gratitude, deeper faith and renewed purpose.
